Quantinuum Secures $1.5M in City/State Funding to Expand Its Albuquerque Photonics R&D Site
Quantinuum (Nasdaq: QNT) received a combined $1.5 million in Local Economic Development Act (LEDA) funding, split evenly between the City of Albuquerque and the State of New Mexico, to convert a roughly 13,263-square-foot vacant site at 5501 Wilshire into an integrated photonics R&D lab, expected to create 25 jobs averaging over $142,000/year. The company declined to disclose its own capital investment in the project beyond calling it "significant," and plans to complete the first phase by end of 2026. This deepens Quantinuum's existing collaborations with Sandia National Laboratories, Los Alamos National Laboratory, and the University of New Mexico.
Integrated photonics is a critical component in Quantinuum's next-generation trapped-ion roadmap (chip-scale laser delivery and qubit manipulation), this is real physical infrastructure investment tied directly to a named technical bottleneck, not a generic R&D announcement, and it's Quantinuum's second manufacturing-adjacent move in a week alongside the Quanta Computer partnership.
$1.5 million in public incentives is modest relative to Quantinuum's own undisclosed "significant" investment, the state/city money is a credibility and jobs signal more than a funding source. Worth tracking whether "integrated photonics R&D" here connects concretely to Quantinuum's manufacturing partnership with Quanta, or stays a separate, parallel initiative.
