IBM Signs Deal to Acquire HRL Laboratories, the Boeing/GM-Owned Research Lab Behind its Silicon Spin-Qubit Bet

IBM

IBM signed a definitive agreement to acquire HRL Laboratories, a private R&D lab jointly owned by Boeing and General Motors, to add silicon-spin-qubit engineering, quantum sensing, and materials research to its existing superconducting qubit program. Both Boeing and GM will keep partnering with IBM on quantum applications after the deal closes, expected by the end of Q3 2026. Financial terms were not disclosed.

IBM has staked its whole roadmap on superconducting qubits; buying spin-qubit expertise is a hedge, or an admission that a second modality might scale faster than superconducting alone. This is IBM's first quantum-specific acquisition since announcing the Anderon wafer foundry in May.

No price tag disclosed on a deal involving two blue-chip corporate sellers (Boeing, GM) is notable in itself. The real question is whether HRL's silicon spin-qubit IP actually accelerates the 2029 Starling target or just adds headcount to the research budget line.
