IBM CEO puts a date and a dollar figure on quantum computing for the first time: revenue impact by 2028-29, $1 trillion in value by late 2030s
Speaking on CNBC the same day IBM and startup Algorithmiq announced a "quantum advantage" result (a quantum computer solving a verifiable problem more efficiently than classical machines), CEO Arvind Krishna said quantum would have a "measurable impact" on IBM's top and bottom line by 2028 or 2029, and that the company is "pretty convinced" quantum represents $1 trillion in value by the end of the 2030s. Krishna also addressed the 25% stock drop from IBM's Q2 miss (covered earlier in this feed), saying about 40% of deferred customer deals had already closed within three to four weeks of the shortfall.
This is the most specific public timeline any major quantum player's CEO has put on record, a dated revenue milestone and a dollar figure, on a major business news outlet, not a white paper or conference keynote. It also directly follows up on the stock-drop story from two weeks ago, giving investors a first real answer on whether those deferred deals are coming back.
"40% of deferred deals closed within three to four weeks" is a specific, reassuring number offered without independent verification, worth checking against actual Q3 results. A trillion-dollar figure with no methodology attached is the kind of claim that makes headlines regardless of whether it holds up; the 2028-2029 revenue timeline is the nearer, more checkable promise to hold Krishna to.
