IonQ completes its $1.8 Billion Acquisition of SkyWater Technology, becomes First Vertically Integrated Quantum Manufacturer

IonQ

IonQ (NYSE: IONQ) closed its acquisition of SkyWater Technology (the largest U.S.-only semiconductor foundry) on July 31, after receiving final regulatory approval three days earlier. SkyWater shareholders received $15.00 cash plus 0.4883 IonQ shares per share held; SkyWater continues operating under its own name as a wholly owned subsidiary, reporting to IonQ CEO Niccolo de Masi. The deal was first announced in January 2026. The combined company holds its Q2 earnings call August 5 and an investor day September 8.

This is IonQ's largest and most structurally significant move to date, owning a domestic chip foundry outright is a different bet than every other name on this feed, which relies on third-party or partnered manufacturing. It directly gives IonQ a fully controlled U.S. supply chain heading into a period of tightening CHIPS Act and export-control scrutiny.

Vertical integration cuts both ways: it removes a supply-chain dependency, but it also means IonQ now owns SkyWater's existing foundry customer base and cost structure, assets and liabilities it didn't have exposure to before. The August 5 earnings call and September 8 investor day are the two dates to watch for whether this actually shows up as a strategic asset or a drag on margins.
