Swiss startup ZuriQ raises $25.5M to commercialize a 2D trapped-ion architecture built on Penning micro-traps

ZuriQ, an ETH Zürich spinout, closed a $25.5 million seed round led by Quantonation, building on a $4.2 million pre-seed in 2025. The company uses static magnetic fields (Penning micro-traps) instead of the oscillating fields most trapped-ion competitors rely on, letting ions move and reconfigure in two dimensions rather than being stuck in one-dimensional chains. It has already demonstrated a 3x3 array of nine individually controlled ions, fabricated with Infineon using standard semiconductor processes.

 Every major trapped-ion competitor (Quantinuum, IonQ) currently builds on one-dimensional ion-chain architectures. If ZuriQ's 2D approach genuinely scales better, it's a real architectural challenge to the scaling assumptions baked into the trapped-ion category, not just another funding round in a crowded field.

 A working 3x3 array using standard semiconductor fab partners (Infineon) is a real, checkable technical claim, more credible than most seed-stage demos. Still: nine ions is a long way from a commercially useful qubit count, and the company itself frames this round as funding the path to "hundreds and eventually thousands" of qubits, a multi-year bet, not a near-term product.
