IonQ Signs Its Second National Lab Partnership In Two Days, This Time With Sandia On National Security Applications
IonQ (NYSE: IONQ) signed an MOU with Sandia National Laboratories to explore quantum co-design for computing, networking, and national security applications, including trapped-ion fabrication and silicon photonics, through Sandia's Quantum Demonstration Facility in New Mexico. This follows the $15 million EPB partnership in Tennessee covered in this feed two days earlier; no dollar figure was disclosed for the Sandia agreement, and Sandia already has similar cooperative agreements in place with several other quantum companies, including a four-year, recently renewed relationship with Quantinuum.
Two national-lab-facing announcements from IonQ in two days is a real pattern, not a one-off; it's worth tracking whether these MOUs are building toward IonQ's own $125M-scale DARPA-style contracts (like the one PsiQuantum landed, covered earlier this week) or staying at the exploratory-research level.
This is an MOU with no dollar figure, timeline, or specific deliverable, meaningfully lighter than the EPB deal two days prior. Sandia's own materials note it has "similar agreements... with several other quantum computing companies," so IonQ is one of several, not an exclusive partner here. Worth revisiting only if this converts into a funded contract.
