Ciena (NYSE: CIEN), Toshiba, and regional fiber operator Quantum Corridor completed a trial validating 1.6 terabits per second of quantum-safe encrypted connectivity on Quantum Corridor's live production network between Chicago and Hammond, Indiana. The trial combined Ciena's NIST-certified post-quantum cryptography algorithms (running on its WaveLogic 6 Extreme hardware) with Toshiba's quantum key distribution servers, running alongside existing 800G encrypted traffic on the same physical fiber. Ciena says customers already running its older WaveLogic 5 Extreme hardware can get the same protection through a software upgrade, no new hardware purchase required.

This is meaningfully more concrete than most "quantum-safe" announcements on this feed: a real commercial network carrying real customer traffic, from a large publicly traded networking company (Ciena), at a genuinely high bandwidth figure. It's also relevant background for the Anchorage Digital and Galaxy Digital post-quantum stories covered earlier this week, this is the physical network infrastructure layer those firms' cryptographic strategies would eventually run on top of.

A live commercial network at 1.6 Tb/s is a real, checkable technical claim, and the software-upgrade path for existing WL5e customers is a genuine, low-friction commercial angle that could show up in Ciena's revenue relatively quickly. Worth watching whether "software upgrade" language shows up as an actual disclosed revenue line in a future Ciena earnings call, since that's the difference between a proof-of-concept and a real product upsell.
