IonQ Commits $15 Million To Build The First Quantum Memory Unit Ever Installed Inside A Live, Operational Fiber Network
IonQ (NYSE: IONQ) and Chattanooga utility/telecom provider EPB announced the Tennessee Quantum Communications Research Center, a five-year, $15 million IonQ-funded lab that will install the world's first commercial quantum memory unit inside an actual working fiber optic network, rather than a lab testbed. EPB will provide the live network and serve as commercialization partner; the partners project the center could generate two to three times its cost in wider Tennessee economic impact, alongside roughly two dozen jobs.
Quantum memory, storing and relaying quantum information across distance, is one of the core unsolved pieces of a real "quantum internet," a category several smaller private startups (ArQ, Photon Queue) are also chasing with far less capital. IonQ putting real dollars and its own scientists into a live network, not a simulation, is a meaningfully larger and more committed bet than typical MOU-style quantum networking announcements.
$15 million over five years is a real, disclosed number, rare for this category of announcement, and building on an operational network rather than a lab is a genuinely higher bar. Still an R&D lab commitment, not a revenue-generating product; the economic impact projections (2-3x return) come from the partners themselves via a university-affiliated researcher, not an independent source.
