Q-CTRL Navigates 83 Kilometers of Open Ocean Without GPS, Using Earth's Gravity Instead

Q-CTRL demonstrated GPS-free navigation aboard a ship crossing 83 kilometers of open ocean, using a device that reads variations in Earth's gravity field instead of satellite signals. The system achieved accuracy within one nautical mile and reduced long-term sensor drift by roughly 70 times compared to standard systems, all without a radio signal that could be jammed or spoofed.

With nearly one million GPS jamming incidents recorded globally in the first quarter of 2026 alone, this addresses a real and growing operational problem for defense and shipping.

A real open-water test with a specific accuracy figure sets a higher bar than most sensing announcements in this space. Immediate customers are likely to be military and defense; it is worth watching whether any of the company's named defense partners announce an actual purchase.
